Although the bootleg label Westwind identifies the music on this disc as a 1975 concert, it actually comes from a concert in Cologne that must have been broadcast due to the excellent sound quality.
Bill Evans, accompanied by the phenomenal bassist
Eddie Gomez and drummer
Eliot Zigmund, is in his typically strong form throughout the performance. The pianist's "Time Remembered" is primarily a feature for
Gomez, while his explosive "34 Skidoo" features the trio clearly on fire.
Evans' moving ballad "Turn Out the Stars," premiered as part of a suite first performed at Town Hall following the death of his father in 1966, remained a part of his repertoire for the remainder of his career; this touching interpretation has great interaction between him and his bandmates. The driving, extended treatment of
Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way" is an obvious highlight, as is his moving rendition of
Earl Zindars' "Sareen Jurer." While the mislabeling of this concert is unfortunate, it is one of the better quality bootlegs of
Bill Evans' music ever issued.
