Harvey Lindo (aka
Modaji, aka
Laws of Motion), is a DJ and producer specializing in breakbeats, and his debut album Kid Gloves: A Modaji Long Player is strictly by-the-book breakbeat stuff. These 12 tracks lack both rhythmic and melodic variety musically;
Lindo barely even changes the settings on the synths and drum machines between songs, and the beats are completely lacking the inventive qualities of the best in the genre. Vocally, these insipid beats are overlaid by a procession of uninspired R&B divas and interchangeable rappers; even the guest shot by the usually reliable
Count Bass D on "Rugged Individuals" disappoints. There is no sense of inspiration on this record, and not even much sense of the joy of creation. Kid Gloves: A Modaji Long Player is the sound of musicians and singers punching the clock, bereft of ideas and not even sounding like they're having a particularly good time. ~ Stewart Mason
