This is another entry in K-Tel's budget priced series, cobbling together ten tracks of country-oriented novelty material that made the charts (sometimes crossing over to pop) in the time frame between the late 1950s to the early 1970s. As is usually the case with these K-Tel packages, the short running time and lack of liner notes is further compounded by the inclusion of recut stereo versions ("May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" by
Little Jimmy Dickens, "Long Tall Texan" by
Murray Kellum, "The Tennessee Bird Walk" by
Jack Blanchard and
Misty Morgan, "Mr. Custer" by
Larry Verne, and "King of the Road" by
Roger Miller) in place of the original hit versions. On the plus side of things, this compilation does include original versions of "Mule Skinner Blues" by
the Fendermen, "A Boy Named Sue" by
Johnny Cash, "Along Came Jones," and
Ray Stevens and His Henhouse Five Plus Two doing "In the Mood." But in general, this is a buyer-beware package for those looking to collect the originals.
