Confusingly titled,
Live in Concert, a collaborative effort by Pittsburgh pop rapper Wiz Khalifa and swarthy New Orleans emcee Curren$y, is not a concert recording but rather a six-song EP originally intended for release as a free online mixtape. Funky samples of '70s flute instrumentals and Latin-flavored odd-tempoed beats characterize the EP's best moments, such as the bright album opener "Cabana." Khalifa's carefree delivery and indulgent rhymes about weed and money offer a great foil to Curren$y's thuggish routines and vivid imagery. Innovative production is as much a star of
Live in Concert as either of the emcees, though, with instrumental passages taking up as much air space as the rhymes. ~ Fred Thomas
