Jody Miller's pop-oriented country music bears some similarity to
Bobbie Gentry's, but
Miller has more technical ability as a vocalist, if a less distinctive sound.
Miller's singing style, in fact, changes from track to track, from pop balladeer on "If You Think I Love You Now" to faux
Barbara Mandrell on "He Loves Me All the Way."
Miller took a page from
Sonny James' playbook in the '70s and had a string of hits covering pop songs in her glossy country style. The title track and "If You Think I Love You Now (I Just Started)" were moderate hits that immediately preceded
Miller's commercially successful foray into girl group material.
Look at Mine, although predating her run of hit cover versions, launches right into the practice by dishing up renditions of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and
Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Looking Out My Back Door." The wide variety of songs she recorded and her chameleonic vocals prevented
Miller from establishing a signature sound. As a consequence, the stylistically diverse
Look at Mine lacks cohesion but offers a fair sampling of the many kinds of music
Miller made.
