Single-artist R&B compilations titled Love Songs seem as redundant as single-artist grunge compilations called Angst Songs. Still,
the Pointer Sisters'
Love Songs is a slight change of pace from the shuffling of the same 18 or so songs that have happened all too often to their back catalog. As a result, the upbeat funk-pop hits that the group made its stock in trade throughout the first half of the '80s are avoided here. Nonetheless, that leaves plenty of room for the romantic material. Expected inclusions like "Slow Hand," "I Need You," and "All I Know Is the Way I Feel," and they're joined by covers of
Prince's "I Feel for You" (recorded before
Chaka Khan's version) and
Steely Dan's "Dirty Work," along with "Moonlight Dancing," "Got to Find Love," and several others.
