Metrô Linha 743 was released in 1984 at a time of big political transitions in Brazil, from military dictatorship to democracy.
Raul Seixas was always very much focused on the message and contents of his lyrics, this album is of course no exception. The slightly
Dylanesque title track is a comment on the general atmosphere of fear and unrest in Brazil at that time of enormous social problems and political uncertainty. "Mamãe Eu Não Queria" (meaning "Mum I didn't want to") is a direct critique of the policy of mandatory military service. The lovely, gentle and singer/songwriter styled tracks "Um Messias Indeciso," "Mas I Love You" and "Quero Ser o Homem Que Eu Sou" are other big highlights on this album. In 1984,
Raul Seixas was already starting to suffer from serious health problems caused by his alcoholism. Towards the end of the album are two rather unnecessary re-recordings of two of
Seix's most famous songs, namely "Eu Sou Egoísta" and "Trem Das Sete," but
Metrô Linha 743 still comes across as a very strong and interesting record.
