Like many artists on the Fat Possum label,
Paul "Wine" Jones was discovered by rock critic Robert Palmer. A professional welder,
Jones released his first album,
Mule, in 1995, although the record is much rawer than most '90s blues record. Gritty and greasy,
Mule is driven by
Jones' simple, pounding guitar rhythms, which are occasionally embellished by guitarists
Big Jack "The Oil Man" Johnson and
Kenny Brown, who play on two tracks each. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
