Organist Charles Hodges particularly stands out on this record, rewarding the prominent placement of his organ with confident, soulful performances. Mabon "Teenie" Hodges would come to greater fame as his silky, sinewy guitar lines helped propel
Al Green to superstardom, but his contributions to
Willie Mitchell records shouldn't be overlooked. His solo on the stomping "30-60-90" is comparable to
Steve Cropper's best moments, adding grit to already swaggering groove. The band's greater involvement in arranging and songwriting strengthens the album thoroughly, from
Mitchell's brother James Mitchell's fiery saxophone on "Sunshine of Your Love" to the entire group getting credit for "30-60-90," making
On Top one of
