Mathieu Lussier is best known as a bassoonist and as a member of the exemplary Canadian wind quintet
Pentaèdre, but he is also a composer, mostly of music for winds. This album includes nine of his pieces for various combinations of wind instruments and piano, most of which have not been previously recorded.
Lussier's music is lyrical and conventionally tonal. Some of the pieces have a new age feeling and some are reminiscent of
Claude Bolling's jazz/classical works.
Pentaèdre plays with its characteristic polish and élan, capably assisted by guest artists saxophonist Claudia Schaetzle, contrabassoonist Fraser Jackson, and pianist Louise Lessard.
