Upchurch has spent his busy 2020s alternating country and hip-hop albums, but People's Champ -- the record he delivered at the start of 2022, not long after the country-oriented Same Ol Same Ol -- suggests that he's inching closer to integrating the two sides of his personality. Make no mistake, the album is firmly in the hip-hop camp, featuring guest verses from Jelly Roll and Boosie Badazz, but he finds space for "Remember Me," a country duet with Patty Lynn. More telling, the album concludes with a triptych of hip-hop songs with a lighter touch reminiscent of the softer aspects of Same Ol Same Ol, a move that suggests a possible path toward maturation for the redneck rapper.
