With Playlist for the End of the World, Joey Trap, distinguished rapper from San Diego, could have fallen into the trap of releasing a repetitive list of over 20 tracks with the addition of different producers for variety. For the first part of this new album, there is a little of this with an emphasis on multitude on excellent tracks such as Holy Ghost, Try, Yuherd, Never Stop and Filet (certainly the most hard-hitting), the majority produced by Akachi. But the boss of label Young Rich Squad does not finish here. As we delve deeper into this album, its influences become more and more apparent: Jamaican music on Mary Jane, drill on Die4Me… All this creates a chaos that reaches a peak among the final jarring tracks, the most virulent and audacious like Spit and Notinthemoodtoday. If armageddon is soon to come, it’s now got its soundtrack. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
