Here is a complete oddity, with an exceptional musical density and instrumental richness. It must be said that for this Rhapsody, Bobby Previte – a long-time expert in avant-garde and all kinds of experimentations – surrounded himself with far from dull colleagues… With guitarist Nels Cline, singer Jen Shyu, harpist Zeena Parkins, pianist John Medeski and saxophonist Fabian Rucker, the drummer and percussionist (but also guitarist and harmonica player) from New York unfolds a gaudy partition influenced by jazz, rock, improvised music, film scores, or even world music. The atypical nature of this album is in part due to the combination of elements from very diverse origins. Jen Shyu’s elusive voice for instance surfs on rather insane percussion motifs before losing itself in Medeski’s piano. Unsettling but intoxicating! © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz
