When U.K. producer Roni Size and his Reprazent crew released the double-disc NEW FORMS in 1997, it was hailed as one of the crowning achievements of the jungle and drum ‘n’ bass movement. The influence of the album, boosted by the fact that it received Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize, was sizable, and 10-plus years later, Size revisited the tracks on REPRAZENT- NEW FORMS 2.
Size maintains the integrity of the originals, which blend drum ‘n’ bass tendencies with jazzy, abstract touches, but gives the whole an edgy, contemporary update. He layers new sounds and textures over cuts like “Brown Paper Bag,” “Trust Me,” and “Heroes,” turning them alternately atmospheric and intense. This 21st century-style remix, with its added bonus tracks, is a celebration of, and an improvement upon, the original.
