This is a splendid release by
Nana Caymmi, recorded live in 1989 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she was accompanied by a wonderful Brazilian band and
Wagner Tiso, who was spending one year in Spain to further music studies and gypsy research (his roots). In perfect shape, she visits all-time classics by
Vinícius de Moraes,
Tom Jobim,
Toninho Horta,
Dorival Caymmi, and others. The tight, exuberant instrumental backing with occasional jazzy solos gives the perfect support for her to release all her dramatic, sensitive feeling, and the band is freed in the 6/8 instrumental "Chorava." The audience's enthusiastic acclamation is a signal that this release will appeal to those who are into good Brazilian music.
