The golden age of the Cuban conjunto happened in a very small country, and involved quite a small hierarchy.
Chappottín was one of the two great típico trumpeters, and his singers included Miguelito Cuní, Rene Alvarez and
Cheo Marquetti, all of whom had fine bands of their own, as well as the great Afro-Cuban singer Gina Martin Cuní and the rest of them in turn had roots in the enchanting '30s one-trumpet septeto style from which the conjunto grew -- roots especially clear in the Cuní CD here. ~ John Storm Roberts, Original Music
