The funky beats, tape loops, and organic jamming of Spaceheads alternates nicely between two general veins: on one hand, there's rather experimental and deconstructive electronic collage, and on the other there's straight-up nearly danceable accessibility. The chaotic and abstractive points are probably most interesting in the artistic sense -- "Evacuate the Planet" and "What Machine" are straight-to-DAT recordings of the duo playing and electronically manipulating organic instruments, and "Open My Box" creates an amazing wash by manipulating a thumb piano and triangle; the tracks in this vein have a sense of human artistry that's preferable to simple loop manipulation. On the other end, however, there are tracks like "Bones," which tops sturdy rhythms with samples from a 1959 recording of prisoners' work songs, and "Whatever Happened to Billy the Comedian," the sort of pleasantly beepy electronica that doesn't seem to have been created by anyone at all. The album as a whole is a pleasant change from the often stale electronica of the mid-'90s. By experimenting freely and basing their manipulations as much on organic performance as digital samples, the Spaceheads put an intelligent human presence behind their work that's hugely appealing.
