None would ever accuse British death metal stalwarts
Bolt Thrower of being a singles band, but with U.K. consumers still interested in smaller product configurations (as much for convenient sampling of new acts as for collecting purposes), their label, Earache, saw fit to release several maxi-singles and EPs into the marketplace, along and betwixt their full-length albums. 1992's
Spearhead EP was one such example, featuring an extended mix of the title track (which, along with "Dying Creed," was drawn from the excellent death metal sludge-fest of
The IVth Crusade); a worthy non-album cut called "Crown of Life"; and the somewhat less striking "Lament," which never really gets a head of steam, even by
Bolt Thrower's regularly slow-paced standards. For serious collectors only. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
