Although they are generally known for their 1940s pop hits,
the Mills Brothers did their most innovative and interesting work in the 1930s. A quartet of brothers with an unerring ability to vocally mimic all the instruments in a jazz orchestra, particularly the horns, they were arguably at their best when they eschewed the pop elements in their style for a more jazz-oriented approach. This delightful collection assembles several of their 1930s efforts, as well as a handful of their 1940s recordings, and the end result is a remarkably seamless sequence of vocal gems. Check out the title tune here, "Sweet Georgia Brown," which is done in an almost soothing hum, and remember that those horns you're hearing are not horns at all, but voices, and you'll undoubtedly find yourself hooked for life on this truly amazing vocal group.
