A year after the release of their debut album,
A Brief History of Love, the duo behind the group,
Robbie Furze and
Milo Cordell, returned with a mix CD titled
Tapes for !K7. The band’s sound mixes the hazy atmospheres of shoegaze and dream pop with dancefloor-friendly beats and electronics, and the songs they picked for their mix fall into the same general parameters. Whether it’s the hazy funk of
Gang Gang Dance's "Ego War," the wobbly groove of
Actress' "Hubble," or the washed-out drift of
jj's "Let Go," the choices make sense. They also fit together very well -- mixing
jj into
Salem was a natural, and so was following the gloomy new wave of
Light Asylum’s "Shallow Tears" with
Gang Gang Dance’s heavy remix of their own “Velvet.” The mix works both as a glimpse into the sounds that are inspiring
Big Pink in 2010 and also as a nice entry point for their fans to discover some obscure and very interesting new electronic sounds. ~ Tim Sendra
