Mark Sherman is one of many talented players in New York who hasn't had a lot of opportunities to record as a leader, though it is not for a lock of chops on his instrument. The vibraphonist leads his quintet through a powerful post-bop session, sticking mostly to originals, but also offering a driving take of "Nature Boy" which swings like mad, along with a dreamy interpretation of another chestnut, "Old Folks." Tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker guests on two tracks, including the very tense "Motive #10 Judiacan," which is dedicated to the late pianist Kenny Kirkland; along with "Motive #11 Always Reaching," a soft and lovely ballad. The rhythm section is a good one, with pianist Allen Farnham, bassist Phil Palombi, and drummer Tim Horner. All in all, a very enjoyable CD.
