Katie Noonan may be best known for her time with art-pop outfit George and a solo career that’s danced across rock, pop, classical, and jazz. But as an impressionable kid growing up in the ’80s, she was seduced by artists such as Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, and Cyndi Lauper, so on her 20th studio LP, she pays tribute by giving their biggest hits a jazz makeover. She bends ICEHOUSE’s “Electric Blue” into part cha-cha, part lounge jazz, while the sparse piano take on Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” aches with desperation. The Eurythmics’ “When Tomorrow Comes” is transformed from joyous pop-rock to measured adult contemporary statement, while a-ha’s “Take On Me”–surely a staple of any ’80s tribute–is transformed from glitzy synth-pop into a beautiful, somber piano ballad. Her take on Sting’s “Russians” adheres to the original’s sobering arrangement, but by and large the key word here is reinvention.
