In a lot of ways it seems churlish to review this as a music release. It's a CD, it's for sale, but it's not a commercial release in the way so many are. Recorded in 2001 at
Mickey Hart's ranch, it does exactly what it says on the tin. If you're familiar with the
Gyuto Monks, you'll already know what to expect. If not, there is a deep beauty about it, although it's not for casual listening. It has to be absorbed, almost through the skin as much as the ears, and taken into the heart. It's not for everyone; it's slow-moving and many layered. But if it catches you, then you'll be hooked. At times the voices don't sound human as overtones clash and move, and overdubbing gives a huge sound to what's actually a very small choir and some percussion and horns. For some it will prove addictive; to others it will mean little at all. ~ Chris Nickson
