Following the breakup of L'Etranger,
Cash took a more rootsy tack with his solo debut. It's maybe a bit too polished to be truly authentic roots music, but ultimately it's quite well-done pop music. "Smile Me Down" is a great start to the album, and while most of the rest of the album doesn't quite match up to the beginning, there are enough good moments (notably "Trail of Tears") to make
Time and Place a satisfying listen. Of special note is the inclusion of
Andy Maize on backing vocals throughout, as Maize would later turn up as the lead vocalist in the Skydiggers,
Cash's brother Peter's band. ~ Sean Carruthers
