Not to be confused as a Twista solo album,
Twista Presents New Testament 2K: Street Scriptures is actually a sampler for the Chicago-based Legit Ballin' label. Though Twista is by far the album's standout artist -- along with the undeniably seductive Ms. Kane -- his labelmates are also impressive, as are producers Cayex and Toxic. What's perhaps most impressive about this album, though, is the surprising amount of diversity. The lead single, "Ball Wit Us," integrates some Latin rhythms and R&B singing, for example, while other songs go for a more traditional hardcore/gangsta vibe. As the label's name no doubt implies, these rappers aren't your typical crew, even if they still like to floss and represent their city. Underneath the pimp posturing is a subversive, good-hearted tone. Overall, Legit Ballin' proves itself to be a promising camp, and undoubtedly one of the top indie labels in the rap game circa 2001. Furthermore, their unique locale (Chicago) and their diverse range of sounds (both vocals and production) help them stand out as a crew to watch. ~ Jason Birchmeier
