Edson's delicate debut celebrates a light, naturalistic approach to well-arranged chamber pop. Frontman Pelle Carlberg's influences have certainly worn with time, from
Lee Hazlewood to
Nick Drake, but just as
Belle & Sebastian shape a small sound out of a large band,
Edson pitched a dozen different instruments towards sparse acoustica. Flutes, electric guitars, glockenspiels, and harmonicas are fused to the band's thin, unassuming compositions. The fact that the album was released on Valentine's Day in their native Sweden suggests a sweet, vivid thing, but unfortunately
Unwind With Edson was very much aloof, something too self-conscious to really work, and an attempt to disguise the band's eccentricities with dull formalism and a shy twinkle of the eye.
