The weekends look a little different to
Brett Young because he's growing older and getting a little bit slower, preferring to putter around at home instead of shutting down bars. It's a fitting sentiment for a singer who just turned 40, so no wonder he not only wrote a song about it, he wrote eight others with a similar subdued, sunny vibe.
Young isn't afraid of stepping into sticky sentiment -- "Lady" offers a design for life for his newborn daughter, one that boils down to copying her mother's every move -- and even when he's telling an ex to "Leave Me Alone," he does it with a smile and a bubbly beat. That cheerfulness has mellowed from his earlier recordings but as this mini-LP was also produced by
Dann Huff,
Weekends Look a Little Different These Days sounds similar to what
Young has sung before. Although he'll try on a new style or two, he's not one for fashion, he's happy cruising in the middle of the road singing songs to fellow contented travelers. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
