Carrying on where the hugely unappreciated
Pooh Sticks left off,
International Language's Debut record overflows with glittering melodies, breathtaking vocal harmonies and a knack for "borrowing" everything (guitar riffs, lyrics, melodies) not nailed down. Which is not surprising given that the brains behind
International Language is Steve Gregory the same guy who masterminded the Pooh Sticks.
Where the Bands Are is a concept album, telling the story of a small town girl who dreams of being a groupie, becomes one and finds out that it isn't all she thought it would be. The songs flow together seamlessly and amazingly, given the decidedly non-serious nature of Gregory's past work with the Pooh Sticks, pack quite an emotional punch. Gregory really knows how to make a good-sounding rock and roll record; the guitars leap out of the mix, the vocals soar in and out beautifully and the drums sound like drums. And unlike Hue of the Pooh Sticks, he can carry a tune, borrowed or not. This record is a must for fans of the Pooh Sticks and for fans of well-written, well-played and well-sung power pop. ~ Tim Sendra
