Though you will see this album often listed as jazz, it has its roots more firmly, in many respects, in the folk world -- an immediate comparison would be
Cat Stevens, thanks to the vocal and guitar affectations; the gentle production by
Matt Balitsaris does nothing at all to dispel these conclusions.
Matthews has a rich, distinctive voice that seems full of sunshine and joy. He is a genuine pleasure to kick back and listen to through ten originals and a cover of
Sting's "Fragile" that improves in interesting ways on the original. Matthews was not very
visible after the release of this album, which is a pity. ~ Steven McDonald
