Conductor and composer who studied with Otto, Moscheles, Rietz and Hauptmann. In Dusseldorf Dietrich became acquainted with Schumann's circle and befriended Brahms. When he left Dusseldorf he found poisitions in Leipzig, Bonn, Oldenburg and Berlin affording him the opportunity to present and conduct some of his own compositions. Conducting allowed him to advocate the works of Bach, Schumann, and Brahms with little pathos toward the New German School. "Robin Hood" and "Das Sonntagskind" were his operas both of which were performed during his lifetime. Dietrich also composed symphonies, chamber music, solo pieces, sonatas and some vocal music. © Keith Johnson /TiVo
