b. 26 July 1922, Macon, Georgia, USA, d. 24 June 1975, New York City, New York, USA. Walker’s career as a blues singer and guitarist began in Newark, New Jersey, in 1955, and he recorded for a number of small labels in the late 50s and early 60s. Changing audience tastes and marriage prompted him to retire from music in 1962, but after his wife’s death in 1968 he began to perform and record again, and was just beginning to be promoted to white audiences at the time of his death. Not to be confused with the soul singer of the same name.
