"Lockjaw" Davis was a veteran of the Swing and Bop scenes whose funky, R&B-drenched saxophone helped define the gritty Hard Bop and Soul Jazz of the '60s. Davis could lead an organ group with finger lickin' grooves, but he was also an impressive improviser and master balladeer with big bands or in free wheeling jam sessions.
