Celebrating the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's 125th anniversary, this double CD from Chandos samples recordings made between 1973 and 2013, under such conductors as Alexander Gibson, Neeme Järvi, Matthias Bamert, Peter Oundjian, Bryden Thomson, and Stéphane Denève. The program offers a mix of Romantic and modern pieces and excerpts by Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, Sergey Prokofiev, Felix Mendelssohn, Camille Saint-Saëns, Jean Sibelius, Dmitry Shostakovich, and many other composers who have been championed by this Scottish orchestra since its founding in 1891. While one may wish recordings by John Barbirolli, George Szell, Walter Süsskind, and other conductors of earlier years had been included in this collection, the orchestra's broad repertoire is well represented and a feeling for the group's history is adequately conveyed.
