Taking a page from E.S.T and The Bad Plus, Manchester, England’s Gogo Penguin push outside the traditional jazz piano-trio format with their synthesis of ringing piano melodies, muscular rock rhythms, tangled electronic beats, dubby postproduction touches, and even bits of modern classical. Featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, new bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner, the group’s second album moves further down that path with standouts like the contemplative “Murmuration,” the manic and jaunty “Garden Dog Barbecue,” and the circular “Kamaloka.”
