An energetic stylist who was initially heavily influenced by John Coltrane, Bob Berg's warm, often evocative tenor sax solos are delivered with fury and zest. His later dates have included good use of soul jazz devices. Berg has worked in groups led by Horace Silver, Tom Harrell and Sam Jones among others. Berg studied at the High School of Performing Arts in New York and Juilliard, before touring with Brother Jack McDuff in 1969. He worked with Horace Silver and Cedar Walton in the '70s and '80s, then joined Miles Davis in the mid-'80s, where he moved from a hard bop surrounding to a funk/R&B and jazz-rock context. He's since recorded as a leader for Denon and Red; he'd previously done sessions for Xanadu and EPM. Berg has several dates available as a leader on CD.
