Bronze are a San Francisco-based trio consisting of drummer Brian Hock (
C.L.A.W.S.,
the Vanishing), vocalist Robert Spector (Muscle Drum), and electronic artist Miles Friction, who plays handmade electronic oscillators in addition to typical keyboard synthesizers. The group's hypnotic sound combines echo-covered stream-of-consciousness vocals with percolating electronics and busy, polyrhythmic drums, recalling early electronic groups like
Silver Apples as well as danceable post-punk bands such as
Liquid Liquid.
Bronze began after Hock returned to his home of San Francisco in 2006 after a stint in Berlin. Moving to a D.I.Y. performance space called the Cave, Hock and fellow resident Spector formed
Bronze along with Friction, who established a home studio called Trojan Cavern where the trio lived and recorded music.
Bronze made their recording debut in 2009 with two singles: "Sides" on Hobo Jungle and "One Night in Mexico" on Dutch imprint Hex Grammofoonplaten. "The Rouge Became" followed on World Famous in San Francisco in 2010, and the trio's full-length debut, Copper, appeared on New York-based Rvng Intl. in 2011. After spending the next few years continuing to build up their reputation as an exciting, chaotic live act, the group's second album,
World Arena, arrived on Los Angeles-based Not Not Fun in 2014, and third full-length In Stone followed on Spanish label Burka for Everybody in 2015. Longtime fan John Dwyer (
Thee Oh Sees,
Damaged Bug) captured the group's ferocious performances with an installment of his Castle Face label's Live in San Francisco series in 2016. ~ Paul Simpson
