One of the first Western musicians to master both sitar and tabla, Collin Walcott also played violin, snare drum, and tympani. He was among the most gifted and knowledgeable percussionists in recent jazz history. Walcott studied sitar with Ravi Shankar and tabla with Alla Rakha. As a teen he was resident percussionist at the Yale Summer School of Music in Norfolk, Connecticut. Walcott graduated from Indiana University in 1966, and later traveled to Los Angeles. After moving to New York, he worked and recorded with Tony Scott in the late '60s; they played bebop and a wide range of ethnic musics. Walcott recorded with Miles Davis on sitar in 1972. He played with The Paul Winter Consort in the early '70s, then Oregon and Codona in the mid-'70s and the '80s. Walcott was killed in an accident in then East Germany while on tour with Oregon. He recorded as a leader for ECM. Walcott has a compilation Works available, and also can be heard on various discs by Oregon and Codona. ~ Ron Wynn and David Nelson McCarthy
