Toronto's
Comet Control emerged in the middle part of the 2010s with a heavy sound that fused together tones of riffy psychedelia, shoegaze, noise, and Krautrock. Signed to New York indie Tee Pee Records, they followed their eponymous debut with 2016's cosmic
Center of the Maze and 2021's
Inside the Sun.
When their Toronto-based psych-metal band
Quest for Fire split up in 2013, guitarist Andrew Moszynski and vocalist/guitarist Chad Ross decided they weren't done working together and re-formed under the name
Comet Control. With the addition of bassist Nicole Howell, drummer
Jay Anderson, and Christopher Sandes on keyboards, the band added a layer of shoegaze dreaminess to the thudding heaviness of
Quest for Fire's sound. Working quickly, the group began playing shows in May 2013, then hit the studio to record an album. Released in May 2014 by Tee Pee,
Comet Control was recorded at Toronto's Candle Recording (
Fucked Up,
Sebastien Grainger) and produced by the bandmembers themselves. After some touring behind the album, the band started work on their next album at Candle Recording with engineer
Josh Korody. Heading down a similarly heavy path,
Comet Control added some simplicity and focus to their sound on 2016's sci-fi-influenced
Center of the Maze.
After a 2018 tour of Europe with like-minded psych-rockers
Earthless, Moszynski and Ross began writing and recording at their own Palace Sound Studio in Toronto. The results became
Comet Control's third LP,
Inside the Sun, which appeared in August 2021. ~ Tim Sendra
