b. 2 April 1940, Auckland, New Zealand. Following an appearance in 1971 on an album by Mike Maran, MacRae embarked upon a busy period of session activity throughout that decade. His keyboards (usually electric piano) can be heard on recordings by Back Door, the Walker Brothers, and Max Merritt And The Meteors. Additionally, MacRae also found time to join Ian Carr’s Nucleus, Robert Wyatt’s post- Soft Machine band, Matching Mole, and the equally short-lived Pacific Eardrum (with his wife, singer Joy Yates). He also wrote music for UK television series, notably the Goodies and Bread, before moving back to Australia where he worked with his own jazz trio.
