Danny Zelonky's
Low Res project is just one of the diverse cast of artists assembled around the Plug Research label, the West Coast's home for experimental techno. Born in Milwaukee, Zelonky studied musique concrète at a local conservatory and began recording in 1994. Changes in locale from New York to Tokyo to North Hollywood brought Zelonky into contact with a range of artists and music, resulting in the release of his 1996 single "Amuck" on Tokyo's Sublime label plus Detroit's Metroplex (the imprint run by techno godfather
Juan Atkins). In 1996, the
Low Res track "Multiratio" appeared on Plug Research & Development, a compilation released by the Los Angeles-area label gradually gaining a worldwide name for stateside experimental techno. His debut album Approximate Love Boat appeared on Plug Research as well, towards the end of 1998. Around the same time, Zelonky recorded material for the long-awaited second LP by
Juan Atkins' Model 500 project (1999's Mind and Body), and also released the an LP on Mille Plateaux as Crank. ~ John Bush
