Maya Hawke is a New York-based actress, singer, and songwriter known for her roles in the BBC's adaptation of Little Women and the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. She made her musical debut in 2020 with
Blush, a dusty alt-country set that showcased her airy, laid-back vocals and heartfelt lyrics.
The daughter of actors
Ethan Hawke and
Uma Thurman,
Hawke grew up in New York, immersed in the arts from a young age. After graduating from the art-oriented Saint Ann's School in Brooklyn, she studied acting during summer programs at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and New York's Stella Adler Studio of Acting before moving on to Julliard. While also working as a model, she landed a role in the BBC's Little Women miniseries in 2017 and left Julliard before filming began.
Hawke's breakout role came in 2019, appearing alongside fellow actor/musician Joe Keery (Djo) in season three of Netflix's popular horror series Stranger Things.
A lifetime lover of poetry,
Hawke worked with collaborator
Jesse Harris (
Norah Jones,
Madeleine Peyroux) to set her own lyrics to music, crafting a warm and lonesome Americana-inspired sound well-suited to her relaxed, clear vocal style. Her first album,
Blush, appeared in June 2020. ~ Timothy Monger
