He was born Francois Glowinski in France to a jazzman father; how Glowinski became Ousman Danedjo boggles the mind. When he heard the African band Toure Kunda as a teenager, Glowinski was floored. He decided he had to learn more about West Africa, so he took his first trip to Senegal when he was just 17 years old, and when he returned to France he began studying Arabic and Bambara. Over the years he's also picked up Wolof and Fula, and he learned to play the ngoni, the kora and various percussion instruments. He got a gig in Camara, but before long Danedjo was on his own, playing festivals with leading lights of Afro-pop such as Lokua Kanza. He released his debut, the lovely, jazz-inflected Enelmedio, in 2008.
