b. Quincy Jones III. British-born, Los Angeles, California, USA-based early 90s hip-hop producer. The son of Quincy Jones, QD got the rap bug as a breakdancer for Nike, before attending jams and street parties. There he was introduced to the work of the new rap kings, which built on his abiding love of soul legends like Stevie Wonder. However, it was the production work of Mantronik (Mantronix) that really caught his attention, especially a track entitled ‘Cold Getting Dumb’ by Just-Ice. Among his earliest commissions as a producer/remixer was a cut for T. La Rock, ‘Nitro’, while he was still living in New York. He next approached Warner Brothers Records, who suggested he put together a compilation album to showcase new talent. The resultant Soundlab eventually led to rapper Justin Warfield being signed. It also spurred QD on to further production work, most notably with LL Cool J and Ice Cube. These two heavyweights anchored his reputation via the highly successful 14 Shots To The Dome (three tracks) and Lethal Injection (four tracks), respectively. He has gone on to produce and remix for a myriad of other talents, including Tairrie B, Naughty By Nature, Da Lench Mob, Yo Yo (the latter two both out of Ice Cube’s stable), En Vogue, Special K, Queen Latifah and the Whooliganz. He continues to run his own company, Soundlab productions, titled after the compilation album that made his reputation.
