German violist
Roland Glassl was born in Ingolstadt, Germany to a family of violin makers, and he plays an instrument made by his father, who also gave him his first lessons. He studied with Ana Chumachenko at the University of Music in Munich, where he earned his diploma. He later moved to the United States, where he studied violin with Paul Biss and viola with Atar Arad at Indiana University. As a soloist,
Glassl has appeared with the German Philharmonic Orchestra Rhineland-Palatinate, the
Prague Chamber Orchestra, the
Niederösterreich Tonkünstler-Orchester, the China National Opera House Symphony Orchestra, the
Georgian Chamber Orchestra, the
Pécs Symphony Orchestra, and the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra.
Glassl also performed and recorded with the
Mandelring Quartet from 1999 to 2015. He has also performed chamber music with
Julia Fischer,
Michael Sanderling,
Lisa Batiashvili,
Miriam Fried,
Pekka Kuusisto,
Sharon Kam,
Leon Fleisher, Michael Tree, and
Hariolf Schlichtig.
