The duo of Ben Long and
Jamie Bissmire have been recording track after track of hard, Detroit-style techno ever since their move from the decks to the mixing board in 1993. Old-school B-boys and fans of electro from way back, Long and
Bissmire were turned on to the explosion of Detroit techno in London during the late '80s and early '90s. The duo picked up turntables and began DJing in the early '90s, opening gigs by
Primal Scream and the
Orb.
Bissmire had already debuted on wax as the founder of
Bandulu, but
Space DJz themselves first earned release in 1993 on Infonet, the short-term dance label opened by Creation. After releases on Ongaku, Soma, and NovaMute during the mid-'90s, the pair issued their debut album,
On Patrol!, for Soma in 1999. Both also own their own Detroit-slanted labels, with Long's Potential Records hosting producers like the Advent,
Oliver Ho, and
Inigo Kennedy, while
Bissmire's Ground label has featured
Claude Young, among others. ~ John Bush
