German producer and DJ
Tensnake's distinctive blend of house, cosmic disco, and synth pop has been a fixture of dance clubs since the mid-2000s. He broke through with the sparkling, tropical-tinged 2010 single "Coma Cat," which reached the U.K. singles chart, and produced remixes for
Pet Shop Boys,
Lana Del Rey,
Little Dragon, and numerous others. He founded the True Romance label and continued issuing bright, finely tuned club tracks, while exploring his pop side with the song-driven 2014 full-length
Glow, as well as the 2019 debut by his electro-pop trio Gemini Rising.
Marco Niemerski was born in Hamburg in 1975, and grew up listening to soul, funk, boogie, and pop. He acquired his first drum machines and synthesizers while a teenager, and began taking music production seriously in 2000. He made his commercial recording debut as
Tensnake with the Restless EP on the Mirau label in 2006. Subsequent EPs appeared on Radius Records, Endless Flight, and Players Paradise, but his first record to garner significant critical acclaim was the 2009 EP In the End (I Want You to Cry) on the Running Back label. Two of the EP's tracks were included on Resident Advisor's poll of the top 50 tracks of the year, and the producer was chosen to compile a DJ mix for the website's popular weekly podcast.
In 2010,
Tensnake released the
Coma Cat EP on the Permanent Vacation label. The EP's title track was licensed for release by
Defected in the United Kingdom, and after it became a hit, the producer's remix work picked up considerably. His remixes of
Aloe Blacc (2010's "I Need a Dollar"),
Lana Del Rey (2012's "National Anthem"), and
Pet Shop Boys (2013's "Thursday") followed, and at the end of 2013,
Tensnake released his
Prince-indebted downtempo single "58BPM," with vocals from
Fiora. The track landed on his debut album,
Glow, which was released in 2014 with guest appearances from
Stuart Price,
Jamie Lidell, and
Nile Rodgers.
Tensnake continued releasing singles through his own True Romance label, including 2015's "Keep On Talking" and 2016's "Desire," while he performed at major festivals such as Coachella, Glastonbury, and Tomorrowland. He formed synth pop trio Gemini Rising with
Fiora and producer/songwriter
Lester Mendez, and their debut album, Best Case Life, appeared in 2019.
Tensnake signed with Dutch label Armada and released dance-pop singles like "Automatic" (with
Fiora) and "Somebody Else" (featuring
Boy Matthews), leading up to his second solo full-length, L.A. ~ Jason Birchmeier & Paul Simpson
