Estonian rapper and visual artist
Tommy Cash (sometimes styled as
TOMM¥ €A$H) brings his wild, unhinged vision to tracks that recall an unholy alliance between
Die Antwoord and the late
Lil Peep. Debuting in the early 2010s, he caught attention with his early works C.R.E.A.M. and Euroz Dollaz Yeniz. As his viral buzz increased, so did the star power of his collaboration roster, which included
Charli XCX (2018's ¥€$) and
Diplo (2021's MONEYSUTRA).
Although
Cash insists -- according to the track "Guez Whoz Bak" -- that he was created in a lab in Kazakhstan by scientists mixing semen with chemical waste, he was born
Tomas Tammemets in Tallinn and grew up in the rougher parts of the city's outskirts. As a child, he was influenced by American hip-hop culture, embracing rap, graffiti, and breakdancing. Also inspired by
Kanye West,
Cash explores darker themes resulting from boredom and despair, often presented with surreal, outrageous, and subversive delivery. His debut EP, C.R.E.A.M., featured "Guez Whoz Bak" and was the thematic precursor to his first album, Euroz Dollaz Yeniz, which arrived in 2014. He followed with the singles "Winaloto" and the
Marilyn Manson-goes-trap track "Surf"; both went on to win him Estonian Music Awards for Music Video of the Year in 2017 and 2018, respectively. He appeared on "Delicious" from
Charli XCX's mixtape
Pop 2, later employing her producer
A.G. Cook for his own song, "Pussy Money Weed." He issued his second full-length, ¥€$, in 2018. The set featured contributions by Rick Owens,
Caroline Polachek,
Boys Noize, and
Charli XCX.
Cash returned in 2021 with MONEYSUTRA, a five-song EP including "Zuccenberg" with
$uicideboy$ and
Diplo and "Millionaire Mullet" with Riff Raff. ~ Neil Z. Yeung
