Germany's
Wareika are an adventurous, genre-bending electronic trio who combine techno with forays into dub, jazz, and avant-garde soundscapes. Emerging around 2008, the trio issued a handful of singles before grabbing audiences with 2010's Harmonie Park.
Formed in Hamburg in 2007,
Wareika features the talents of
Jakob Seidensticker (DJ, computer production, drum-machine sequencing, mixing),
Florian Schirmacher (vocals, synthesizer, percussion) and
Henrik Raabe (guitar, synthesizer, percussion). Prior to coming together,
Seidensticker worked as a DJ, and both
Schirmacher and
Raabe studied classical and jazz. Drawing upon such influences as
Fela Kuti,
King Tubby, and
Sun Ra, as well as Detroit techno DJs like
Derrick May and
Carl Craig, they began crafting a dynamic, cross-pollinated approach to electronic music. Beginning in 2008, they issued singles like "Men Village," "Belonging," and "Seemless," on labels like Connaisseur, Eskimo, and Future Classic. The group's debut, Harmonie Park, appeared in 2010 and showcased their expansive aesthetic. A second full-length,
Formation, arrived on Tartelet Records in 2010, followed by 2013's Wternal, and 2016's The Magic Numbers. In 2018, the trio released the five-track Water, Sky, Sun, Wood on Mule Musiq. ~ Matt Collar
