A native of Bern, Switzerland, cellist
Wen-Sinn Yang attended the Hochschule für Musik in Zurich as a student of Claude Starck, and worked with
Wolfgang Boettcher at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. He performed as a soloist with the
Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1989.
Yang taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Saarbrücken between 1995 and 1997, and in 1998 he became the artistic director of the Domleschger Sommerkonzerte in Thusis, Switzerland. He has performed as a soloist under such prominent conductors as
Lorin Maazel,
Mariss Jansons,
Wolfgang Sawallisch,
Colin Davis,
Grzegorz Nowak,
Daniel Klajner, and
Semyon Bychkov, and played chamber music with
Julia Fischer,
Lisa Batiashvili, Hermann Voss,
Thomas Brandis,
Ingolf Turban, and
Eduard Brunner.
Yang is a member of the Kandinsky String Trio and the Trio Schäfer, Then-Bergh, Yang, and he has also performed with the
Auryn Quartet. In addition to performing cello concertos by Henri Vieuxtemps and David Popper,
Yang has researched and played the neglected music by the virtuoso cellists of the 19th century, such as Carlo Alfredo Piatti, Adrien François Servais, and Karl Davydov, and championed the modern works of Leonid Sabaneyev, Frank Martin,
Sofia Gubaidulina,
Aribert Reimann,
Isang Yun, and
Gordon Chin.
Yang was named professor of cello at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich in 2005. He has also served as artist in residence for the
Taiwan Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded for Oehms Classics, CPO, Genuin, Naxos, Avie, and other labels, and the DVD of his performance of
Bach's Six Cello Suites was released by Arthaus.
