Lutenist William Carter attended Florida State University, where he studied classical guitar with Bruce Holzman, and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees. In 1989, he traveled to London on a Fulbright scholarship to study lute with Nigel North, and became a member of the Academy of Ancient Music, the Palladian Ensemble, and the English Concert. He has toured North and South America, Europe, and Asia, and appeared at international music festivals as a soloist and in ensemble performances. As a professor of Baroque Studies at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Carter also teaches lute. He has recorded for Linn Records.
